What does "STEM-FOCUSED" mean?

Harmony’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and science) curriculum is student-centered and inquiry-based and emphasizes mastery of 21st century skills that all students will need to be successful in college and career.

Our STEM program is a part of Harmony Public Schools Academic Department, which involves a team of curriculum specialists, instructional coaches, and lead teachers in Harmony Public Schools System.

It has three components:

Professional Development
Harmony believes that content-focused professional development is a critical need to ensure the quality of teaching science and mathematics. Our STEM training model has two major components; the mastery of content knowledge and delivery of the content with effective instructional practices.

HPS Project-Based Learning Program (PBL)
Project-Based Learning is an instructional approach that emphasizes collaboration and personalized learning.In PBL, student groups engage in meaningful inquiry that is of personal interest. These problems are real-life oriented, curriculum-based, and often interdisciplinary.

Learners decide what activities or processes to perform. They collect information from a variety of sources, and then analyze, synthesize, and derive understanding from it.Harmony developed a standards-aligned, cross-disciplinary, multi-sensory model called STEM Students on the Stage (STEM SOS) that integrates three core subject areas: a STEM subject, social studies, and English language arts. The cross-curricular connections and hands-on learning deepen students’ understanding of topics they choose while allowing teachers to more actively engage their students in new ways of learning.

The department also provides strategies and resources for schools to build STEM school atmosphere connecting the students to higher education. We design a variety of opportunities for students to take STEM education “beyond the classroom” and see how today’s instruction connects to career and lifelong learning.

At Harmony, students are expected to master their subjects, and every Harmony student graduates college-ready. Our high school program is designed to provide each student with the essential elements of a college prep education, along with opportunities to engage in the exploration of intense study of particular fields of interest.

Harmony is steadily growing as an entrepreneurial organization. In just 10 years, the organization has grown from one school in one city to a multi-city, robust network of more than 35 schools with support for every Harmony student.Harmony has built its support network to leverage two core organizational strengths:
  • A strong culture of collaboration, demonstrated by the “can do,” passionate attitude of its staff.
  • A distributed leadership model that enables deep consistency and fidelity to the school model, as well as quick and effective decision-making.
The resulting network builds upon these strengths at each individual school, while providing support to all schools through our central office.

Schools consistently deliver a high-quality program, based on our experience and success to date and led by school administrators and teachers who fill key administrative responsibilities
Collaborative and responsive regional clusters, led by:
  • Cluster superintendents, who manage day-to-day cluster-wide responsibilities
  • Knowledge leaders, such as principals and assistant principals working within clusters, who ensure consistency with the school model while developing school- or cluster-specific best practices
A lean central office led by Harmony’s Executive Director with a five-person leadership team supplying strategic guidance, technical support, and financial aid to all clusters

with Higher Education Institutions
Harmony actively collaborates with local colleges and universities. Harmony post-secondary partnerships:
  • Engage our students in research projects in collaboration with college-level engineers and scientists
  • Expose our students to the collegiate environment
  • Provide professional development to teachers
  • Empower our students with college credit options
Higher education institutions that collaborate with Harmony include Rice University, Texas A&M University, The University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Houston.
